本剧改编自张小娴的知名小说《面包树上的女人》，是张小娴“面包树系列”的第一部作品。 从小梦想着来上海的程韵（唐嫣 饰）终于进入上海某知名大学深造，同学朱迪之（隋棠 饰）也随她一起前往，两人和光蕙（刘冬 饰）成为了最好的朋友。光蕙因叔叔婶婶不离不弃的爱而感动，激发她对美好爱情的向往。迪之与邓初（纪焕博 饰）开始了一段浪漫的恋情，而程韵却与一同上课的写歌才子林方文（黄宗泽 饰）因各种误会而矛盾不断，在青春的岁月里彼此心生爱意。一次偶然相遇程韵认识了徐起飞，起飞的热心和体贴让程韵感动不已。程韵的不安全感因为林方文一次又一次爆发，不论是风情画家费安娜、妙龄女郎乐姬还是能歌会唱的葛米儿。迪之则为了爱情不断的追逐，光蕙为了父母渐渐接受孙维栋。程韵和林方文彼此逃离；迪之成全田宏的爱情选择放手，成全他人也成全自己；光蕙在结婚前夕逃婚去找安小禄，为爱奔走。追求爱情的同时亦不放弃面包，爱让她们的人生轨迹改变......
